“Trying to define yourself is like trying to bite your own teeth.” Alan Watts
During the winter, which can be long and cold, I feed the squirrels. I know there are varying opinions on this. Some people are bird lovers and feed the birds. They become irate when squirrels eat the bird food that they set out. They discuss this over chicken dinner.
Now that the warmer weather is here, I still feed the squirrels. We have a lot of squirrel food and it’s fun to watch them scamper about. That last phrase came from a Disney movie. Feeding the squirrels is also a good way to get rid of some unwanted food.
For instance – someone gave me a gift basket with crackers. I don’t eat crackers. So the next logical question was, do squirrels eat crackers.
Yes, squirrels eat crackers. But only a few. At first I did a short guilt trip about feeding foods to wild animals that might not be good for them, expecting the SPCA to start picketing my house at any moment.
But then I remembered all the junk food we feed ourselves and our children. If I feed my cat the wrong food I might get a lecture. If I gorge on corndogs, pizza, and ice cream I might get a group to happily join me. Go figure.
Here’s the squirrel that went crackers chilling out after snack time.
By evening most of the crackers were still there. Our squirrels know about moderation. The next morning all the crackers were gone. Our neighborhood raccoons know about foraging.
