“I go to seek a great perhaps.”
I recently heard a radio show on food, which is always one of my favorite subjects. It brought up another aspect of food presentation – naming. While I was aware that the visual presentation of a food influences enjoyment, researchers found that the name of a dish influences people’s choices.
For instance, in a cafeteria there were two separate offerings of carrots. One was glazed carrots and the other was something like sassy glazed citrus carrots. Guess which one people chose even though the actual carrot dishes were the same. Sex sells vegetables?
The other presentation, besides verbal, is visual. I’ve learned this over and over from a friend of mine who is an artist with food. Fruit salad, aka luscious fruity bliss (?) is a visual delight in her hands. I chop fruit and put it into a bowl. Not my friend.
She’s also has a gift for using amazing plates.
So remember, before you call the family to dinner for enjoyment of artfully arranged food, try to come up with a name for the food that appeals to their imagination. Good luck with Brussel sprouts!
