“Intelligence without ambition is like a bird without wings.” Salvador Dali
The other day I was driving along a country road when I rounded a corner and came upon a family of sandhill cranes next to the road. I stopped the car, opened the window, and asked if they’d mind if I took a picture. They said it would be OK so I snapped a few while they paraded back and forth.
We got to talking and I asked about their child’s school and if they were concerned about SAT’s coming up. I asked the lady if she’d been thinking about what to serve for dinner that evening. She glanced over at me and seemed puzzled.
I tried to explain that as a superior species I had the ability to plan ahead and worry about things that might never happen. I also had the ability to obsess, which is basically riding every train that pulls into my head. Or is that squirrel caging? I have so many abilities that sometimes it’s hard to keep them straight.
Then I asked the dad how his job was going and, like his mate, he simply looked puzzled. As the conversation wasn’t going along very well I decided to be on my way, as I probably had an important place to be. I said, “Have a nice day”, and that’s when one of them, I’m not sure who, spoke. “And why wouldn’t we”, they said. I guess they don’t know about all the things that could go wrong in one day. It’s good to be a superior species, isn’t it!
