“Live life with a little spice.”
I was searching around for something to do with a block of tofu that I bought. I have a recipe for baked tofu but wanted something new. I came across a recipe for Tandoori Tofu. However …
The original recipe had a tablespoon of cayenne pepper in the spice mix. I didn’t see that happening. I looked up other recipes for tandoori spice mixtures and found a crazy variety. Everything from cumin to ginger to lemon to cinnamon were found in varying degrees in various recipes. I decided to use the recipe I found, immediately adjusting some of the ingredients, and adding others that just seemed right.
tofu, extra firm cut in 1/3 inch slices
oil for frying
1 T cumin
1 T sea salt, more or less
1/2 t black pepper
1 T turmeric
1 T smoked paprika
1/4 t red pepper flakes
1/2 t cinnamon, my addition
1/2 t ginger, my addition
dash of cayenne
Mix spices together in a container large enough to dip the tofu slices. Dip only one side of the tofu slices.
Heat a skillet or grille top until very hot. Make sure you use an oil with a high heat point. Place tofu slices, coated side down, and fry for 3 minutes. Turn and fry an additional 2 minutes.
Serve immediately or allow to cool and refrigerate.
One block of tofu made 12 slices. Please don’t tell my husband because 2 slices mysteriously disappeared while I was preparing them. Delicious right off the grille top. I’m interested to taste them cold. I may have a new favorite snack.
