So it seems that oftentimes when I open my mouth and decide to do something, the universe steps in and says, “Let me help you with that!” So it happened with the statement to my husband that went something like, “After I get back from my trip I want to start some light strength training.” I didn’t know exactly what that would look like, but I’d give it some thought. But that’s all I gave it – some thought.
And then – my dear friend who’s struggling with physical limitations after a fall wondered if it would be possible to get in and out of my car. We’d both been looking forward to that possibility so we could have adventures, mainly in thrift stores. Son of a gun gonna have big fun!
Her limitations, however, hover somewhere between the neighborhood of painful mobility and are you kidding. But after a year and some months of recovery she was able to get in and out of my car, a low to the ground Prius, with much effort and a major amount of determination. Road Trip!
So what does this have to do with strength training?
Have you ever hoisted a wheelchair in and out of the back of a car twelve times in one day? And for mental stimulation, try attaching the leg supports to the chair. It’s like a puzzle made of large parts. “I can do it!” became my mantra.
The adventure was ten hours long and included four thrift stores and lunch. We spent little in the way of money and lots in the way of time together.
I think I found my strength training program. We have plans!
