“Because we always did it that way.”
I love our library. It’s small but friendly. Their offerings are always current. There are two book discussion groups – a morning group and an evening group to accommodate people’s life styles and schedules. I belong to both.
Recently I was in the library checking out season 5 of Homeland, which is a great show if you like plot driven stories with amazing writing and acting. Right in front of me was a women checking out her finds and mentioning that she still had another book at home that was overdue. She wanted to know what she owed.
“We no longer have fines for overdue books,” the librarian told her.
Seems our librarian did her homework. Research found that library fines don’t get books back any faster. In fact, the research suggests that people who owe fines avoid the library. So if libraries want to encourage reading a fine-less program might help accomplish that.
What next might we discover about the effects of being nice to people? You don’t mean being nice to everybody, do you Grandma Pat??!!
